National Service Scheme, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports Govt. of India, popularly known as NSS was launched in Gandhiji's Birth Centenary Year 1969, in 37 Universities involving 40,000 students with primary focus on the development of personality of students through community service.
Today, NSS has more than 3.2 million student volunteers on its roll spread over 298 Universities and 42 (+2) Senior Secondary Councils and Directorate of Vocational Education all over the country. From its inception, more than 3.75 crores students from Universities, Colleges and Institutions of higher learning have benefited from the NSS activities, as student volunteers.
NSS Symbol
The symbol of the National Service Scheme is based on the 'Rath' wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Orissa. These giant wheels of the Sun Temple portray the cycle of creation, preservation and release, and signify the movement in life across time and space. The design of the symbol, a simplified form of the Sun-chariot wheel primarily depicts movement. The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social transformation and upliftment.
NSS Badge
The NSS symbol is embossed on the NSS badge. The NSS volunteers wear it while undertaking any programme of community service. The Konark wheel in the symbol has eight bars which represent the 24 hours of the day. Hence, the badge reminds the wearer to be in readiness for service of the nation round the clock ie for 24 hours. The red colour in the badge indicates that the NSS volunteers are full of blood ie lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.
Motto of NSS
The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is: 'NOT ME BUT YOU'. This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other person's point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human-beings. It underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society on the whole. Therefore, it should be the aim of the NSS to demonstrate this motto in its day-to-day programme.
Benefits of Joining
The NSS scheme was introduced in Dr.YSR University of Health Sciences during the year 1991. Since inception of the scheme the Programme Officers encouraged volunteers and participated in all the welfare activities. The NSS scheme of Dr.YSR University of Health Sciences is different from all the general universities in Andhra Pradesh because the Dr.YSR UHS has jurisdiction of entire state of Andhra Pradesh. It is also different from the volunteers point of view, mainly volunteers are appraising from the faculty of health sciences ie., Modern Medicine, Dental, Ayurveda, Homoeopathi, Unani, Naturopathy, Physiotherapy, Nursing and other paramedical courses.

Government of India has allocated 5000 NSS Volunteers to Dr.YSR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada for the year 2018-19.
NSS units under Dr.YSR University of Health Sciences organized Health check-up, Specialty and Blood donation camps benefiting 40000 and collected 1500 units of blood. Tree plantation programs were organized and around 20,800 saplings were planted. NSS volunteers of all the Units participated in Pulse Polio Immunization Programs.
NSS Program Officers along with NSS Volunteers participated in the State Level NSS Youth Festival and National Integration camp at Rajahmundry and Hyderabad respectively. A two day self-defense training program for NSS Girl Volunteers and a personality development program for volunteers were successfully conducted. On the occasion of World Diabetes Day on 14-11-2017 with a theme: “Diabetes and Women” conducted Elocution competitions and prizes and certificates given at college level and final winners awarded at University level.
NSS Volunteers from difference colleges participated in the Youth Festivals at National Level at Noida and at the state level at Tirupati.
NSS Cell in collaboration with MEPMA, Andhra Pradesh had conducted TOT in Menstrual Hygiene (Masters training for Menstrual Hygiene) throughout the state for two months and nearly one lakh women were trained. NSS with MEPMA, made a great humanitarian effort of collecting pledge consent forms from over one lakh plusorgan donors and handed over to Jeevandan AP through our Hon'ble Chief Minister Shri. Nara Chandrababu Naidu.
Dr.YSR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada has been selected for Evaluation study of the NSS in India by TATA Institution of Social Studies (Mumbai) for sample study among the professional Universities in India.
Dr.YSR UHS NSS Volunteers have been selected for national level programmes like Adventure Training Camps, Republic day Parade Camp, Pre republic Day Parade Camps, National Integration Camps, National Youth Festivals, and National Level Desert Safari etc.
