This Act may be called the AP University of Health
Sciences Act, 1986. [The name of the University of Health Sciences Act, 1986 was amended as “NTR University of
Health SciencesAP Act, 1986” vide Act No.4 of 1998. The Change of the name came into effect from 2ndFebruary,
1998 as notified vide G.O.Ms.No.24, dt. 24-1-98.] The name NTR University of HealthSciences substituted as
Dr.YSR University of Health Sciences vide AP Gazette copy dt.16-01-2006.
Academic Wing plays a vital role to achieve the objects of the University such as
- To maintain a uniform curriculum in all the institutions affiliated to it.
- To improve the standards of Medical, Dental, AYUSH and Paramedical Educationincluding research.
To fulfill the objectives of the University many steps
have been taken. ProminentProfessors / Experts from the affiliated colleges are nominated as the members of the
Board ofStudies and Academic Senate. As part of globalization University had a tie up with National
andInternational Organizations like Harward, Association of Indian Universities. NTR MEDNETConsortium was
started in July, 2008 with a group of teaching institutions affiliated to University.The consortium started with
43 members in 2008 has reached to 271 colleges. The consortiumsubscribes with a National and International
Organization, to all specialities in Modern Medicine,Dental, Nursing, Physiotherapy, MLT and Indian System of
Medicine. The consortium conductsperiodical hands on trainings, seminars, workshops, demonstrations by the
publishers in themember colleges to impart knowledge and expertise in accessing E-journals and E-books.
TheDigital Library has joined Electronic resources in Medicine Consortium hosted by NationalMedial Library, New
Delhi and is also the member of information network consortium of UGC.Medical related articles are being sent
regularly to the students and faculty of affiliated collegesto promote research activities in the member
colleges.
Functions :
- The University is offering various UG, PG, Super Speciality, Ph.D & PDF Courses inModern Medicine, Dental
Surgery, Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopathy, Naturopathy, Nursing,Physiotherapy and Para Medical Graduate Courses in
its affiliated colleges. The total number ofcolleges affiliated to the University have gone up from 27 at the
time of inception to 271 as ondate.
Nature of work at Academic Section :
- Consent / Provisional /Continuation of Affiliations/Recognitions:
After receiving the proposals along with Essentiality Certificate from Government, permissions from concerned
Councils etc., University conducts inspection of the college as per the Statutes and on receiving
certification from the Inspection Committee, University grants Consent and Provisional Affiliation. For grant
of Continuation of Provisional Affiliation University will verify all the documents etc. as per the Statutes
and issues Provisional Affiliation/ Recognition orders.
- Board of Studies, Academic Senate:
The Board of Studies for each course is constituted as per Act. The recommendations of the Board of Studies
are to be discussed in Academic Senate and be placed in the Executive Council meeting for resolutions.
- Registration of dissertation topics of MD, MS, Super Speciality, MDS, MD(Ayurveda), MD(Homoeo), MD(Unani),
M.Sc(Nursing) and MPT Courses :
- Before allotting a Registration Number to the dissertation topic it is verified whether the topic is
received through proper channel (i.e. through Guide, HOD and Principal) and whether the respective
student’s admission is approved by the Admission Section.
- Change in the topic is considered with sufficient reasons for the change and within a year. After 1
year, up to 1½ year, change of topic will be permitted by payment of fine of Rs.10,000/-. No change will
be permitted after this time.
- Holding Convocation for conferring Degrees:
The Executive Council shall have power:-
- To confer degrees, diplomas, and other academic distinctions on persons who have pursued an approved
course of study in the University college or in an affiliated college or in any institution recognized by
the University in the manner prescribed by the regulations and shall have passed the prescribed
examination of the University and award prizes and medals concerning such degrees in accordance with the
conditions prescribed.
- To confer degrees or diplomas on persons who have carried on research under the conditions prescribed in
the University College, or in an affiliated college or in any other institution recognized by the
University.
Convocation
- Convocation for conferring degrees, diplomas and other academic distinctions shall be held once in a year
which shall be called the Annual Convocation on such date as may be fixed by the Chancellor and at such other
times as the Chancellor may direct.
- Special Convocation for conferring degrees, and other academic distinctions may be held on such date and
time as the Executive Council may, with the Chancellor’s approval, determine.

- The following are the degrees, and diplomas to be awarded and conferred at a Convocation.
Doctorate / Research Degrees:
- Doctor of Sciences - D.Sc.
- Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D.
Other Degrees & Diplomas - Faculty of Modern Medicine
- Degree in Super Specialities in Medicine and allied subjects – Doctor in Medicine-D.M.
- Degree in Super Specialities in Surgery and allied subjects – (Chirurgiae Magister) (Master in Surgery) –
M.Ch.
- Doctor of Medicine – M.D.
- Master of Surgery – M.S.
- Postgraduate Diplomas in allied subjects of Medicine.
- Postgraduate Diplomas in allied subjects of Surgery.
- PG Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
- Master of Science (Nutrition) - M.Sc.
- Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery – MBBS.
Prevention of Ragging & Taking Disciplinary action:
- To prevent ragging, to make correspondence with all the affiliated colleges is circulated to all the
Principals to implement UGC Regulations / Guide Lines (MCI/DCI) on curbing the menace of ragging in Higher
Educational Institutions. It is mandatory to constitute University Monitoring Cell. If any complaints received
regarding ragging from the students of affiliated colleges in the State of Andhra Pradesh then necessary
follow up action taken.
Preparation of Academic Calendar:
- The Academic Calendar will be prepared every year and the same will be communicated to all the affiliated
colleges for following all the schedules with regard to Academic, Admissions, Exams.
Ethics Committee Meeting :
- Good Clinical Practice training programme to Institutional Ethics Committee members in collaboration with
the Clinical Development Services (CDSA), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and
Technology of Government of India from time to time.
Jnanabhumi :
- The Government of AP has introduced Jnanabhumi programme regarding sanction of scholarship to the eligible
students of all affiliated colleges of Dr. NTR UHS, Vijayawada through online process by following due
procedure.
Appointment of Visiting & Emeritus Professors :
- The University is appointing Visiting & Emeritus Professors in the affiliated Medical Colleges of Dr.NTR
UHS, Vijayawada. Prescribed application form is available in the University website. The Appointment of
Visiting & Emeritus Professors are made as per Dr. NTR UHS rules from Time to Time.
Medical Education Workshop :
- The affiliated Medical Colleges have to conduct workshops in their college for imparting medical education
among UG & PG medical students. The University will sanction amount to the Medical Colleges on their request
for conducting the workshops with prior permission from the University.
